ALGIERS - Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts, Mohamed Benmeradi said Sunday in Algiers that 160,000 new jobs were created in the craft sector in 2012.
At a press conference devoted to the presentation of the balance sheet of the year 2012, the Minister stressed that the activities of the crafts sector have created 160 000 new job positions and achieving a value of 136 billion dinars.
Benmeradi estimated the total number of job vacancies currently in the handicraft sector to 470,000, highlighting efforts to achieve national strategic objectives to reach 900,000 posts for 2025.
Craft activities has doubled from 89,000 activities during the period extending from 2003 with 2010 on a 185,000 current activities, said the minister, adding that they should see some upward to 230,000 operations in 2025 .
He further reviewed the efforts to strengthen the role of craft nationally to mobilize the skills, strengthen training and promote the craft product, noting the participation of several artisans to national shows and international crafts. In another context, 30% of business premises conducted under the program of the President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika, are intended for artisans, said Minister for estimating the number of local 31814 awarded to date.
20% of local artisans will be awarded for 2015, the minister said, stressing the need to create centers of excellence in the field of handicrafts especially regarding ceramics.
